After teaching music lessons in Cypress, TX, for over 20 years, I’ve helped my students achieve things they never thought were possible: record deals, social media fame, music scholarships, and top spots in Texas All-State auditions. Some of them have even toured the world and are teaching music in public schools now (wow—I’m old).

90%+ of my music lessons focus on one thing—the thing that’s helped me the most: ‍

HOW to practice.

But music is supposed to be fun, right? Not just boring drills and exercises. When I was young, I just wanted to rock out and play the songs I loved. I try to balance what students want to learn and what they need to learn. I take what they like, figure out how they learn best, and build around that.

I picked up a guitar at the age of 12 and became instantly obsessed with music. I also learned saxophone, drums, and percussion. I studied music education at Sam Houston for a few years. I took a break from school to try to become a rock star. That didn’t work out, so I went back to school to finish my music degree.

I graduated with a percussion performance degree from SHSU. Yay! Now I have a piece of paper that says I can play drums—now what?

I taught saxophone, guitar, drums, and percussion lessons throughout college, and absolutely loved it. So I figured I would keep doing that for a while until I figured out what I wanted to do. Turns out—I didn’t want to do anything else.

It’s an amazing feeling to see someone start an instrument, have no idea what they’re doing, and go on to do great things with it. And to know I had some part in that? Amazing. Truly rewarding.

I’ve learned a lot of things from some really great music teachers along the way. I’ve also made a lot of mistakes. Now, I want to pass on everything I’ve learned over the last 30 years to the students at The Talent House.

These days, I mostly manage the music school and hang out with my awesome wife and two kids. I’m not teaching one-on-one lessons anymore, but I’ve hand-selected the very best music teachers in Houston—and trust me, I’m picky. I also create YouTube videos for The Talent House channels, and that’s been a really fun way to keep teaching.

Music has changed my life, and I hope I can pass that on to the students at The Talent House so they can find the joy and peace that I’ve found through music.
